Tiny Kitten Teeth is almost hard to describe. It's a comic by Becky ? and Frank Gibson, with art and a story that is both stunning and fresh. We follow our hero Mewsli, a cat moving into the big city of Owltown, where we quickly learn that he does not fit in. He encounters his new "friends" right away and is rushed into a life of chaos and insanity, as he figures out his identity and place in the world he is joining.

The world that we find ourselves in is almost gatsby-esque. Lush and affluent, with dreams out of reach and a large amount of confusion in the way of our goals. The artistic style is completely and utterly fitting to this. It is a distinct retro styling, with a clear reference to the golden books most of us remember from our youth. But it is far from juvenile: the art is masterfully done and tells the store explicitly in panels decked out in outrageous and occasionally overwhelming colors and patterns.

One of the great joys of the comic is in the vernacular of the characters, who use such jolly fun antiquated and "proper" language, referring to each other as chap, and always speaking in a carefully polite formality. Everything in the comic seems to be done to vividly large proportions, which can occasionally result in a confusing experience, but usually just makes you stare at the panels a bit longer.

Mewsli, our protagonist, is easy to love, he's new to this world, just like us, and he just wants to be liked. His friends are endearing in their own way, although frustrating at the same time, in a way that works perfectly for the story. The quaint society we are forced into is full of curiosity and interest, and there's new characters and experiences around every bend. This comic has a definite story arch, and it is not one you want to slip into the middle of, but if you're enthusiastic about the art, catching up is a breeze. It is laden with pieces of art of kittens and tigers in the midst of the strips, but these, while random, are entertaining as well.

It can certainly be said the comic is not for everyone, but the comic's style is a wondrous one, which I would almost call an experience. I get excited whenever I see an update on their rss feed in hopes of some new art to ogle, and to find out where Mewsli has lead himself, or more aptly been led. I recommend it for it's beautiful artwork first and foremost, which, though quaint and sometimes distracting is original and always interesting. I feel like I'm not effectively describing it, maybe I'll try again later. I'd say that if you enjoy the pages I put here, you will enjoy the rest of the comic, if it is too glaring for you, and you expect a comedy, this won't be a good fit for you. But you should give it a go, either way.
