Yes, you're right, its sturdiness is what it's all about in a notebook/laptop - if it falls apart - it just isn't portable!
Spend a lot of time figuring out how to restore the hard disk to its shipped configuration - it can be done easily - also keep in mind it has a lot of OS and ancillary mods specific to the IBM notebook. You just don't want to run a rebuild from a desktop windows OS ... those features will be missing!
I am constantly updating BIOS, support and OS mods from their ThinkVantage update system. Very easy to use ... and it works flawlessly.
